紹介

The Alpendurada Convent, located in the parish of Alpendurada e Matos, municipality of Marco de Canavezes, is surrounded by a landscape of extreme beauty. The convent is part of a property of about 47 hectares on the banks of the Douro River and a large part of its land, about 1.5 kilometers, is bathed by the river. Its foundation dates from the 11th century, it was erected by the Benedictine Order in times before the birth of Portugal. Later on, in the 12th century, due to its size and profitability, D. Teresa Couto acquired this property, and D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, managed it. The convent remained in possession of the counts of Alpendurada until 1926. This convent was transformed into a hotel, with 40 rooms in the context of history and a medieval heritage. It still has all its beauty and wealth, a fascinating austerity with influences from romantic and Mozarabic periods. Those influences are visible in the magnificent halls, considered by some archaeologists to be unique in the world. Of the areas of the convent, we highlight its chapel, the corridors of Arab influence, and areas and leisure facilities such as the swimming pool.
